Yep. Most people won't even get one if they pass a cop at 80 - which is EXACTLY why we should raise the limit.

I do 80 all the time on the highway and have seen cops while at thay speed, but I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in nearly 14 years. I agree with you that it should be raised in many cases.

And the funny thing is, police officers get annoyed when they pull behind someone going the speed limit (and rightfully so).

Off peak (after 9PM), there's no problem with getting rid of a speed limit entirely, and letting the chips fall where they may. Not withstanding construction areas, of course.

During peak, however, when you set a high speed limit, you will get yahoos who insist on driving that speed limit even when the rest of the traffic has slowed down to accommodate the higher volume of cars on the road (otherwise known as rush hour traffic). There's no cop up at exit 13 on I-91S, holding a "Slow" sign to prepare drivers for the pending bottlenecking that begins just after Exit 8.

Presently, the yahoos that insist on tailgating because the sign says they have the "right" to go 65 in ALL lanes, are creating problems on the highways. They're making it more and more difficult for people to drive respectfully, and not aggressively.

When people have the "right" to drive 75, in situations like this, they will demand to exercise that "right" no matter what the situation is. Just take a look at the comments on the North Haven facebook about the storm updates, and you'll see people claiming that because they have children and pay their taxes, they have the "right" to have their cul de sac plowed out immediately, and to hell with State Street (which isn't plowed by the town, it's plowed by the state). And as taxpayers, they *demand* to have the National Guard here in North Haven, and to hell with Hartford, or Branford, or any other place where residents pay their taxes and have the "right" to these things.

Yes, they have the right, but not at the expense of everyone else.

Unfortunately, that is the mentality of too many drivers. And while whining and moaning and griefing on the internet lets off steam in a relatively non-lethal manner - rage-driving does not. I don't want people driving 75MPH under the impression that they have the *right* to drive that fast, simply because there are too many people already driving that fast, who are nasty, vile-tempered, impatient, and the moment they learn they have the "right" to do what they're doing, all hell will break loose on the highway.

In short, get the stupid people off the road, and then you'll be able to safely raise the speed limit. Til then, no.

they DO need to have the State cops sitting next to exit ramps that insist people must slow down to drive on the exit ramp.
Way, way way too many CT drivers just insist on
driving 65-70 mph on a 50 mph exit ramp AND
riding someone's bumper, i.e. tailgaiting them besides.
That is not only so distracting for driver driving ahead
of reckless driver who is speeding, but very very unsafe.
Someone can easily bash into the back of your car
& badly injure or KILL you!
Another we see all the time is many towns outside Hartford
in which reckless drivers just INSIST on running stop signs in residential neighborhoods like ALL the time!
Another dangerous situation the police need to correct.
