LOL I've seen that on some homes down South...snip snip - "Honey, it's kind of warm in here"...AC unit GONE. LOL
LOL yep I had a customer there that had to employ someone to sleep at his houses he was trying to renovate because in a single night the entire house would be stripped bare. Wiring, plumbing, cabinets, carpet, windows and doors etc etc. all gone.
I was kinda put back when I saw on your Fl transplants post how many people sleep with their windows open...I couldn't imagine doing that. I think I have PTSD . When I hear my up stairs neighbor walking around I jump out of bed like someone is in the house

New Haven isn't behind in the crime trends. I did a little research before I left Austin...Austin actually has less crimes committed than New Haven...New Haven has what...150,000 people whereas Austin has 1,000,000.
NH had a job for me though, Austin didn't.
I'm just in a bad mood about my vehicle. Most of the time I don't mind Connecticut. Do I want to live here for 20 years...no, but I (or rather my bank account) can handle it for a couple of years.
Inetlom--I wish I could get out of my lease, but unfortunately cannot. My landlord lives on the second floor and he thinks this neighborhood and New Haven is "wonderful". I'm getting used to it. All this time I've been so worried about my truck at home, but I guess I have to worry about it in other areas too! It just makes me so angry that people steal things that DO NOT belong to them. I work very hard for my money (as many people do) and it really ticks me off that someone can just come along and take something that I paid for with MY money!
Yes New Haven IS behind. I don't mean "amount", by trend I mean the latest thing to hack off your car or whatever because it's something valuable. Most of the crime in CT cities is just neighborhood crap, not a band of illegals stripping houses bare at night.
Look, when you first posted here many of us tried to warn you about living in New Haven. You live in one of the worst places to live in CT, are probably a little homesick etc and you had something stolen. I understand you're pissed. It happens.
However, I would suggest you reread your initial post on this forum:

I hear you on the neighbors...I'm the same way. When we were at the extended stay hotel in March, I couldn't sleep very well.

You couldn't pay me to live in New Haven, I can't think of many good things to say about that city. One or two museums are nice, but you still have to drive into New Haven to get to them. I would suggest you stop lumping New Haven into Connecticut when describing how you feel about living here----because most of the rest of Ct. is nowhere near as bad as New Haven, it's like comparing apples to oranges.
That said, I apologize for my comments to the people who love New Haven. I know it can be insulting when someone moves into your town/city and starts complaining how they hate it there, and wish they'd never moved there etc., or an outsider such as myself makes insulting statements. But New Haven IS rather gritty....

Mrs. Carly - I am sorry to hear what happened to your car. there is no excuse for it but this type of thing could happen in any city. I know you are going through an adjustment period and I urge you to try to get out and start enjoying what is great about our state. Jay

I know it can tough during the week with work and other issues…but try to get out of the city on weekends. Granted we are true nomads anyway…but when we lived in New Haven, at least one of the two weekend days… we headed out of the city to do something. This weekend should be another stellar one weather-wise…blazing sunshine and temps in the mid 70’s.
I don’t know what your interests are (beach, parks, casinos, malls, …etc) but even if you just take a ride out east of the city (I-95 north) and end up at some seafood joint sitting in the sun eating it will be a nice break from the city . The Fishtail at exit 62 off I-95 (about 25 min from you) is nice on weekends, but there are plenty of other places scattered along the coast from Branford to Rhode Island. In a few weeks you can go to some of the farm markets and pick your own strawberries, blueberries …etc (I thought I would hate it - but it was actually fun). The closest ones to you are Bishops in Guilford (Exit 57 I-95 ) and Lymne in Wallingford (exit 15/ I-91 north). There are several small cruises along the Connecticut coast that are interesting (with some amazing houses) and give you a view of the Connecticut coast and the north shore of Long Island, NY you’ll never see in a car. If you’re not really into the Yale lecture/museum scene in New Haven…you have to get out of the city on weekends. Don’t wait till December when it’s 30F to get out and do things on the weekends.
I can never understand why people will go through the hassle of moving out of state and pick an area to live in that is full of crime and not that nice, and then complain about the area. Why is that? These days with the internet at our fingertips, there is no excuse to end up in a bad area unless you do so willingly. I've moved so many times and I cannot fathom moving unless 1) there is work for both me AND my husband, not just one of us and 2) moving to an area that is worth moving to.
I'm sorry mrs Carley that this happened but honestly, the circumstances are just so...bad. Please for anyone thinking of moving, make sure either both husband and wife have secured work OR you can live very comfortably off of one salary. And please, find a desirable area to move to.
We are luck here in CT. Our desirable areas far outnumber the bad. There are so many beautiful towns to live in that I just don't understand why anyone would choose to move to a sketchy area.
It does totally ruin your month to have something from your car stolen. I had it happen 3 times within 2 years living in Tampa. The last time it happened, I headed out the door for work and the car door was open. They had stripped the locks off the door and I could not close it. The car had been discontinued so I had to special order the lock, blah, blah. And I had just the week before raised my insurance deductible from $500 to $1000 to save money!
Look at the square mileage of each city, then get back to us.
And while you're getting back to us, please don't rant about how much you hate New Haven. We here in Connecticut know where our flaws are - we don't need to be lectured about them by someone who has only lived here for a few months (IF said stories are true).

That's the whole point. Austin factors in what we would consider "safe nice suburbs" while New Haven is saddled with a much smaller footprint. Expand New Haven to 251 square miles and watch what happens to the crime rate. Hartford is even worse.

I had a car broken into once, when I parked in the Air-Rites garage, the closest space to the elevator. So now, I don't park right next to the elevator anymore. Amazing, how thieves look for the most convenient target, isn't it?
My husband had his car stolen once. Apparently the thieves took it for a joyride, and ripped out the stereo before abandoning it a few miles away behind a store that was closed for the night.
The scariest thing that ever happened to me, was I was walking home from Toad's Place, at 3:30 in the morning. I lived right off Olive Street, near the corner of State. I got down my street and noticed some guy following me, wearing fatigues. He was aiming his umbrella at me like it was a rifle. I screamed. I screamed, right outside the door of the local After-Hours mob bar. Of course, when you live on the same street as the After Hours mob bar, you can be confident that you're on the safest street in the city. So their lights went on, and their door opened. I was running past. All of a sudden, a taxi careens around the corner and skids to a stop next to me on the street. The driver rolled down his window and asked if I needed help. I told him no thanks, I live right down the street a few houses away, but there's some freak chasing me with an armed umbrella. He said don't worry, he's an off-duty cop. He pulled his taxi around and went screaming back the other way toward the freak. I kept going, but I slowed down some since the freak started running away from the taxi in the other direction. THEN..2 doors away, this red-headed guy comes out of HIS house and approaches me, and says he came out to walk me home. He said he works third shift and this was his night off, so he was up anyway. Fully dressed and everything. So he walked me home and stood out on the sidewalk to make sure I got in and locked my door behind me.
TRUE STORY. It was the weirdest, scariest day I ever experienced in New Haven. But notice something:
I was 100% safe, protected, watched, the entire time. There was no "neighborhood watch" on my street. My street was mostly Hispanics from various countries, who during the day, were often seen outside working on/under their cars, boomboxes blasting out salsa music. Several Portuguese families too. And Cecilians. And a red-headed stranger. And me.
If you're living in a "bad" area, I highly recommend that you get to know your neighbors. You'll be surprised at how much support you can get, simply because you live on the same street.
