The lack of credible alternatives was by his own design. A non competitive government is under little pressure to reform or deliver good governance. This is the problem long term. Energy prices are not going to quadruple anymore so he can't enjoy the early to mid 2000's ever again.

Russia is only diversifying due to sanctions and artificial barriers. They already tried this in the 70s and 80s and similar results are expected. This issue dogged Ukraine too, and without the oil to back it up, you get the current result.

Not entirely true...but, yes, Putin is enjoying the lack of alternatives..

Actually many Russian entrepreneurs are grateful for the sanctions (and in a way Putin too, politically and economically), so yes, the drop in oil prices and the sanctions gave Russia the much needed kick in the butt to diversify and escape the trap of the Dutch disease, typical of resource rich countries not only Russia...so far is going quite good, way too early to predict failure. The Soviet Union of the 70's and 80's was a closed economy where international competition and quality were not part of equation....very different from now.

It is apparent that Putin's media machine has convinced many Russians that the sanctions he brought on them are good for them. Its quite an achievement, yet unsurprising. This probably belongs on the economics forum or at least the Russia forum.

Numbers do not need convincing...Russia is becoming an agricultural and food export powerhouse, surpassing military exports....sorry if that does not fit your narrative....
Yes for some sectors of the economy, the sanctions were good.....it is undeniable...

Seeing as their arms exports have dropped since the war against Ukraine, its unsurprising that some other category would surpass it. Good to hear that Russia is growing in its grain exports alongside Ukraine. They certainly haven't been utilizing their lands effectively since the 80s.

Getting back to Ukrainian defense capability it seems they have to be in pretty bad shape. This is video of Ukrainian BMP-1 IFVs. The cannon looks to be the 76mm low pressure gun and the road wheels with their pressed steel spoked pattern identify them clearly as BMP-1s.

These things are from the 1960s and 1970s. They hod to have drug them out of junkyards and rebuilt them by cannibalizing others or using what stocks of spares they have in storage. Problem is they're going to have very high breakdown rates. When machinery of that sort sit in yards it is very bad for them mechanically.

If these are what they're relying on in a fight they're going to need a lot of luck.

Should be illegal to put men into combat in those things these days.

You're taking a video of some of the oldest equipment in their whole army (used at a training field) and falsely suggesting the entire army is relying on them. Non upgraded BMP-1s are in fact no longer used in combat or on the frontlines. There are a few upgraded ones being used from what I hear but they are uncommon.

Same with tanks, if you watch training videos they have T-64B's in the tank schools but you would be (as usual) mistaken if you assume those are the tanks being used against Russian separatists.

Cannibalizing BMP's no doubt as they haven't been made in decades but if some still work, they still get used as APC's for reserve units and training like you see here. Lot's of old soviet junk laying around in Ukraine and whatever is working is being used.

No. I've seen them wrecked on the battlefield and hauling troops in numerous videos. They are being used. I've seen SU-100s sitting in lots and on trains ffs. Those may be more dependable considering their chassis.
