Unlike the days of the Soviet Russia, today’s world has much wider use of satellite TV as well as satellite internet access. While Putin is dragging Russia back to Soviet level of control over the people, the people have access to more alternative sources for news and information. Putin may shut down news sources he doesn’t approve inside Russia, he cannot shut down news sources from outside Russia that enters the country through satellite sources.
Sadly, Putin can and does block internet access to specific websites. Internet service providers in Russia are required to go through a firewall where there is Kremlin administered "black listing" of subversive content, which is basically anything that might allow people to understand what is really happening. It's not unlike the Chinese "Great Firewall".

Splitting Ukrainians into "real" Ukrainians, mythical creatures that are indistinguishable from Russians yet somewhat lesser than Great Russians beings who are fully dependent on Russia for all the decision making, culture, education, technology etc.. And of course there are those evil "nationalists" who do not want to assimilate to become somewhat dimwitted, provincial funny vassals to reflect all around Great Russian' superiority. Who is the judge who's "real" Ukrainian and who is "banderovets" nationalist? Russians of course. Nazism 101 right there.
Keep in mind that even thoroughly russified Ukrainians, Russians view as "real", are perceived by Russians as somewhat lesser order people who are not to make decisions of their own. To become equal to a Great Russian Ukrainians must not only be russified, they must stop self-identifying as Ukrainians. Real Ukrainians as far as Russian psyche is concerned are somewhat lesser people who MUST follow and obey Russia.
