Before last year we would've automatically looked at Putin. The problem is that we can't be sure because of what's happened in Ukraine and the involvement of foreign intelligence agecies in the violence.

What would you think if Mr. Zvyagintsev should look into this?? He apparently knows about that kind of world we are witnessing where a country literally speaks with a 'single voice'.
Probably one of the Stronkians? Hard line supporters of Putin and Russia kind of like the Right Sector types. I've been on that bridge so many times, once it was real cold and I decided to walk back across the bridge from Gorky area through Red Square to the Metro. The wind was so cold across the bridge I almost froze my arse off just crossing it.
At this point, basically, if you are Russian, and you publicly oppose Putin, you will be either executed or jailed.
Here the most prominent opponents of Putin, and their fates-
Boris Nemstov- executed
Anna Politkovskaya- executed
Natalia Estemirova- executed
Aleksandr Litvinenko- poisoned
Aleksei A. Navalny- jailed
Aleksei is actually quite lucky he is jailed. On the street, the KGB will assassinate him like the rest. In jail it will be too obvious if he is killed, so at least there is some opportunity for him to eventually escape to freedom in another country, if he is ever released. But the KGB could always follow him abroad, and have him poisoned, as they have done with other Russian dissidents.
Dear NOL, now you have become an expert on Russia in a thread titled the Future of Ukraine.
Have you ever been to Russia or Ukraine ?
To me you sound like some who's wold knowledge comes from CNN.
So Zakarchenko seems in a better mood even though the Ukraine government has cut off everything but air. Debaltseve won't have power for about a week, Uglegorsk and other small localities in 3 to 4 days. Water is still being worked on and Ukraine may cut off Mariupol. All in all people can survive and things are improving. A lot of the people displaced in the last few months fighting are coming back and a lot of the men are taking up arms. 600 have joined up and are being trained and organized.

It's better than what the western powers have to offer which we are seeing unfold in Ukraine and Syria. Putin may be an autocrat but he certainly has more to offer. He's what the west fears most, that an autocrat can do a job and do it well. There are merits and flaws to both systems of government.
