Russia will supply coal and electricity in Ukraine without an advance payment. Interesting developments.

Default While Ukrainians disable illumination, Donetsk sparkling Christmas lights

Photo of Donetsk correspondent M. Chagalyan:

In Donetsk everything is done for residents greeted the New Year not only peaceful, but also fun, bright and truly festive by preparing the city for the festivities.

For example, during evening walk along the central part of Donetsk, there is a feeling that the capital of the DPR - is an European city: brightly decorated, well-groomed and shiny New Year's eve illumination. It is difficult to imagine that just a few days ago it was mercilessly shot heavy artillery.

Now everyone says that the people are tired of war, and they want holidays. And maybe, in fact, this year will bring peace to Donetsk. Anyway, all this is very welcome.

I would add that all day today is snowing, so the mood of the citizens even more festive than it was a couple days ago when these photos were made

Re: 'US needs slaves'

Well there you go. A bit off the top I'd say.

To get out of the morass requires 'reason' and 'objectivity' in determining what needs to be done.
I'm not sure why there would be great objection in having western investment into the country.
I'd think Ukraine needs to try something to infuse the country with hope and better lives for future generations. But there seems to be paranoia hovering. It'll kill ya I say!

Now that investment is probably not going into Russia right now because companies and industries look askance at Putin's policies with foreigners. To them he can't be trusted. Understanding that might help Ukraine on its way. But in a way I see the patient afraid of getting an 'infection' with western involvement. I'd say take a little aspirin with some water and try to work it out. But give it time. It really wouldn't be good to stop the 'experimental' treatment say after two days. A country in order to prosper must think good things can happen if a country steps into the unknown and takes a chance.

Of course history matters. Always does, no matter what "changes" are.

Yes it is. I hope that Putin will be able to return Ukraine to Russia. United States come and go away, but Ukraine always will be close to Russian. But Crimea should remain Russian, it will be better for everyone.

Doesn't the Ukranian people pretty much outright hate Russia? And what do you mean with 'return'? Ukraine is a state that is independent of Russia.

Most Ukrainians like Russia, as well as most Russian like Ukraine. Ukrainians living in large numbers in Russia, as well as Russian live in large numbers in Ukraine. Hatred - is a mistake.

But if the Ukrainians choose the path of confrontation with Russia - it is their choice. Of course, we will be respecting their choice. Russian always respected enemies.

What does 'confrontations' imply? To resist returning to Russia?
