I am not sure that one has really to "learn" Russian.
These are the political debates on Ukrainian TV for example.
The Russian speakers speak Russian; the anchor people speak Ukrainian.
So the languages are used interchangeably.
And that's how it goes across the country - Russian speakers respond in Russian to Ukrainian speakers and vice versa.
SOME break into the other language when spoken to in that language, some stick to the language they prefer, but the locals obviously understand each other, no matter in what language they are addressed.
That's the common picture, EXCEPT for the Westernmost areas of Ukraine; people over there speak their specific dialects, that can be not understood by the Russian speakers, not familiar with those dialects.

What about the "future population growth" in other Eastern European countries, following the "wild capitalism" concept?

Same is with Ukraine. (In fact, even worse, now that Poland is half empty with so many Poles sitting in UK and elsewhere, since the salaries in their own country are so low ("market rulez" you know...)

Czechs are trying to grab as many Ukrainians as they can too now, while resisting immigration from Asia and Africa ( same story is with Poland.)
And of course plenty of Ukrainians are heading to Russia too.

This Russian daily show is pointing at it all, using at around 5:02 the episode from the "Servant of the people" ( the movie that made Zelensky so popular) showing the empty Kiev, once Ukrainians received "visa free" access to Europe, lol. (They kinda demonstrate to Ukrainians that participate in their show what this is all about.)

So it is what it is, unless, of course, Brexit will take place for real, sending the ripple effect through the rest of Europe.

There hasn't been a full census in 18 years so its mostly estimates for now. What is known is that the south east is rapidly depopulating and the west half is growing.

Ukrainians are trying to escape their poor economic conditions ( that significantly worsened after the coup d'etat back in 2014 and establishment of pro-American regime.)
They run wherever they can, the US including, and Scrat apparently sees a lot of them (the Western Ukrainians that is,) in State of Washington, where the steady flow of Ukrainian immigration was going to from the 90ies on, via the Baptist churches. (Lately their numbers have been increasing.)
Not only that, but if you read this article, that describes the mass migration of Ukrainians to Poland/Czechia, it would be logical to guess that it's most likely the inhabitants of the Western/Central parts of the country that head there, not the "South-Easterners."

"The giveaway is that data from neighboring countries show that large numbers of Ukrainians are moving, especially to eastern Europe, and more have been tempted to do so since the EU introduced visa-free travel in June 2017. Europe’s official statistical service, Eurostat, is slow to release migration data; the latest available are for 2017. But even those data suggest that something is wrong with the official Ukrainian numbers."

"Most of the inflow went to Poland which, according to Eurostat, issued 585,439 residence permits to Ukrainians in 2017. Ukrainians were also the biggest group of permit recipients in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Lithuania."

The majority of South-Easterners migrated to Russia from the war zone, ( which is only logical,) but these numbers -

"Russia, which many consider to be in a state of war with Ukraine, issued 77,000 residence permits to Ukrainians; 81,000 became Russian citizens."

are still a far cry from how many Ukrainians Poland has gulped up, and this indicates the loss of people from Western/Central parts of Ukraine first of all ( since they are simply closer to Poland.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/ar...inking-ukraine

Here is one more article that proves the same thing the loss of population in Eastern Europe and an attempt to patch things up with the help of Ukrainian population.;

"It is not hard to see why the idea of importing workers is so popular across the region. Central and Eastern Europe suffers from a perfect storm of demographic decline that threatens to undermine the political and economic progress achieved over the past quarter of a century. Low birth rates, high mortality rates, and vast outflows of youth migration to the wealthier nations of Western Europe are combining to create shrinking populations where pensioners may soon begin to outnumber those of working age."

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blog...raphic-decline

Some "economic progress" I'm telling you, what an achievement, when they are literally dying out without that "abominable Socialism" during the "past quarter of a century."
And now they are dragging Ukraine along with them.

The same reason there are so many Russians near mine? Different groups often go to different places in America.

On June 19, Dutch investigators will announce the suspects involved in shooting down MH 17. It is expected that they are living in Russia. The Netherlands has already explained that Russia has refused to cooperate in the investigation, so they don't expect to be able to extradite them (especially since some are Russian nationals). But they will likely be tried in absentia. I can imagine the propaganda machine in St. Petersburg is getting warmed up for this next week.
