As usual you provide good comments on this 'conversation' we are all having here. Stimulating for all.
I just took note of your view that it was 'greed of the West' which killed their 'democratic' dreams.
I kind of look at it another way. Democracy IS a very difficult political system. Even the Greeks 'lost' it at times. Takes a lot of effort.
I just think it's interesting that some the former satellites did better in this vein than Russia. Perhaps they were more comfortable with the US 'system'? But I think I know why. They were checking off with what they had under the Russian economic system. I think they got tired of getting out of their cars when it started to the rain and putting their carefully guarded wipers on their windshields. Planned economies with their 'shortages' bring obvious behaviors!...;-)...
And a Happy New Year to you and all who contribute here. We may not agree but that's not the point. It's exchanging views and trying to make some sense out of events. I don't drink vodka but I do drink 'palinka'. My toast is to all. I just had one shot...;-)...
I don't clearly understand just what you're saying so here are some questions about what you wrote. Feel free to ask any in return. You're in the US but what is your nationality? Polish? Eastern European?

You know and correct me please but Russia has never ever resigned itself from the goals of the October Revolution nor have they carted Lenin away and his ideas. What you have I'd say follows from all that. Frankly, there have been serious problems in instituting the kind of sunny socialism that would insure many benefits to Russians and all their 'brothers'.
Just what are you saying? Russians are still communists?
Quote:
Russia indeed did have a chance earlier when they tried to work with 'democracy'. But unfortunately being rookies they flubbed it. And anyway I don't even think they had the heart to implement it anyway (still there as the remark about the 'opposition). But of course there will be vehement disagreement on this and then the 'blame' game follows.
Did you see any "democracy" in Russia in the 90s? Do you see democracy in the Ukraine today? In America?
Quote:
If 'peaceful coexistence' is the goal here Russia certainly has a funny way of going about it.
You speak as if Russia has committed a crime. What crime was committed?
Quote:
Yes that is true. I don't deny it. But really how are Russians supposed to look at the situation you note in light of what Russia is trying to do with their society and overall country? It's almost to see the country suffering so much for that great socialist vision that seems to be handed down to the 'heirs' of Lenin. I know Russia has junked capitalism to find their own way. Great but it too has its grave problems. You guys are killing each other and for what? A socialist vision or based on a real fear that another is picking a 'junked' way and must be punished?
What do you think Russia is trying to do? Revert back to the old days of the USSR? The last sentence makes no sense at all.
I really think it should be obvious that the problem in the world today is not the Russians, Chinese, No Koreans or Iranians. I think it's America and the EU.
Hi everybody, Happe New Year! I'll come tomorrow and answer questions from previous posts.
I just want to say that our first New year was great! We spent it not hiding in basements as it was promissed. I can't stop to wonder all those absurdities that talk about us in Ukraine and many other countries, so just watch as we met in 2015 http://youtu.be/EczySQvIqh4
And you keep believing your press and governments which are telling you how bad everything here
For Scrat:
I'm sorry that my post wasn't so clear to you. I will answer your questions one by one.
Re: 'Russians are still communists?'
I think they are very committed to socialism and making it the best way they know how. Stems from their history back to the Revolution. They haven't renounced their 'principles' even if the Empire fell.
Have they??
Re: Did I see 'democracy' ?etc etc...
No. Russia and Ukraine had a hard time with it. Russia to me isn't committed to establishing it in its society. I think Ukraine has changed and some there are willing to go for it. Yes we have it here but it's execution is different than the one there if Russians say they do indeed have 'democracy'.
Re: 'Russia committing a 'crime''
No not a crime. Peaceful coexistence is great, a great ideal. Isn't that what she has always strived for with her 'brothers' and with her enemies? But with all the violence there in Ukraine it just seems ironic in that she is willing to accept all that destruction and lives lost in order to adhere to that so-called ideal. Absolutely stunning. Violence seems to be ok then in Russia's view. She appears to be making sure Ukraine knows there will be a price to be paid for 'going another way'. Russia really seems to accept violence in ordering her world there in my view. And among a 'brother'? What a kick in the a**.
Re: 'Russia reverting back to the old days'
Seems that to me. Flexing her muscles, going on about 'destiny', grabbing territory, beating her breasts with pride at the expense of her traditional foes, fostering patronize, shutting off information,
Blah bah I can go on but it would take pages.
All in all like all countries of the world Russia has a 'vision'. Compared to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness I think her actions are in direct opposition to her socialist ideals. She talks one way and dies another.
This analysis may be harsh but it's the way I call it.
And yes I do have a Eastern European background...Ever since I studied history in the modern world and became aware of Russian behavior in Eastern Europe I becane a changed man. Make of it whatever you will but we are all products of our experience.
